What is a Root Canal?

While root canals have a reputation of being a difficult or painful procedure, modern dentistry makes this a simple and often painless treatment. Root canal treatment is a restorative procedure used to repair teeth that are badly damaged, decayed, or infected. Without root canal treatment, the tooth will continue to cause pain as its condition worsens, eventually resulting in the loss of the tooth.

A root canal is an endodontic procedure, which means it is used to treat the inside of the tooth and tooth roots. Inside every tooth is a material called dental pulp, which extends from the center of the tooth to the roots. (The interior of the root is called the root canal, which is where the procedure gets its name.) The dental pulp contains the nerves, blood vessels, and important connective tissues that your teeth need to develop properly.

Because the material is vulnerable to injury, the dental pulp can become inflamed or infected due to decay or damage in the outer layers of the tooth. When this happens, this can lead to pain, swelling, drainage. The only way to treat the damaged pulp is to remove it and clear any infection in the surrounding tissues, providing relief and restoring your oral health.
